Married in 1958, he brought his young family to North Derbyshire in 1965 to become Deputy Manager at Williamthorpe Colliery, and went on to be Manager of High Moor, Westthorpe, and the combined Williamthorpe/Grassmoor Collieries. In recognition of services to mining, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1991.
